Road collage (disorder) 1,2, Heftzi-bah 2013
A view
of a new car park behind the ancient synagogue Beit Alfa, near the fish restaurant Dag-Dagan.
Here in
a light humorous tone, the collage ‘infiltrates’ the road marking, causing a ‘dis-order’
by hiding the horizontal line.
Road collage (disorder) reveals a humorous sensibility and evokes a memory
of being ‘not like the others’. The kibbutz system demanded equality and
unifying behaviour from its members and children. This system supressed
individuality and difference. The one who dared to be different ‘paid a high
price’ by being ‘not accepted’, or stigmatized as ‘too sensitive’ and by being called derogatory
nicknames.

from Arna Golan, A Kibbutz Child
‘Since from the day that we were born we were
educated in the “kibbutz family”, we were not only at the hands of all the
members, but they wanted to “bake” us like a dough in the kitchen, kneaded by
experienced hands, placed in a baking tray and being baked – for his own good,
as well as the kibbutz’s – as an excellent, unified bread.’ There, p. 32. [My

YNG, Road collage
(fragment), Heftzi-bah 2013
(View of the garage and the
little petrol station which was built later on)
Here the collage looks like a
fragment, alien to the surrounding; the white line loses it authoritative
power. Road collage (fragment) reveals feelings of alienation and
loneliness which emerge in the context of my kibbutz childhood. It is only
through this performative action which allows these feelings to come to the
surface of consciousness, that paradoxically, I feel ‘at home’. This little ‘fragment’
is taken out of its context as a (imaginary) road, lacks continuity; left on
the kibbutz’s yard. Its existence is temporary, short lived. The garage
opposite, not more than a temporary structure, was there all my life (52), and
even the little petrol station which was built years later, fail to create a
feeling of stability. This photograph captures a feeling of temporality. Is the
kibbutz a momentarily, passing event? Or is it rejuvenating itself?

kibbutz Heftzi-bah, 2013
(An old car park mark in
the kibbutz’s yard, near the garage)
Road collage (opposite the old, back
gate) These photographs show a
large asphalt area un-marked. The only mark seems alien to its surrounding.
Even a passing car seems somewhat out of place. In the distance the old back
gate is visible, where large, heavy machines used to pass through it. One such
a machine is parked, visible, and seems belong to its natural, agricultural
environment.
Road collage (on pavement) shows the collage as a Found Object. The close distance from which this photograph was taken creates a feeling of intimacy. The pavement 'frames' the collage which 'sits' well within. The collage is central in this composition. The pavement's gap on the right hand side creates a diagonal which complements the vertical lines, one of the collage itself and the other of the photograph's margin. A hole in the pavement creates a dialogue with a circular shape in the collage. The pavement is a familiar, intimate, even loved place in my consciousness. Even though the collage is a strange fragment here it is still being embraced by the pavement. This and other pavements are known to the feet, toes, skin ... The
hands know the
pavement too, they drew games on its, as well as made whistles by
rubbing apricot’s stones on it
They touched the pavements innumerable times as they learned to walk. This pavements know the kibbutz' bodies which stepped, sat, skipped, ran, crawled, stood and fell on them.
A quote from my diary, 22.9.2013
'I have experienced the pavements ... sensually, as if they replaced my mother's body. These pavements were made from hard materials such as cement. In the swimming-pool after a swim we used to lay on the hot cement surface to warm up. We played, sat, walked and found objects on the pavements. The pavement has both functional and symbolic status in my consciousness. I met people on the pavement, I saw, as well as was seen by others on the pavement. And now these pavements are disappearing; replaced by roads.'

Kibbutz Child, Eked Publishing, 2012
‘On our short daily visit [to the
Parents’ Room] we were met by our parents who focused their attention on us;
even when there was tension it was hidden and we were presented with idyllic
welcome … and so we learned from our early childhood that there are two separate,
distinct territories [The Children’s Home and The Parents’ Room], with a gap
between them, and we learned to adjust ourselves to each one of them.
Additionally, there was the public territory, mostly on the pavements, where we
learned to fulfil the members’ expectations of us [as the first group of
children in the author’s kibbutz, Masada].’ There, pp. 34-35. [My translation

‘Idit Levavi-Gabai’s
installation “Up-side down room” is … an emotional metaphor whereby not
only the world but also the emotional centre are presented as an inside-out
pocket. This emotional centre, which is intimate and linked with the space of
home, is chronically mobile from space to space. Levavi-Gabai is searching this
centre in the space of her childhood memory and finds it difficult to locate it
in a clear place: “I feel it in movement, it has no clear location: in the corridor,
in the yard, in the sky, on the pavement – between all the places”.’ There, p.

Once
upon a time, in the summer of 1986, a terrible collision occurred between a
minibus and a truck; ten young lives had ended abruptly. Teenagers came
back from a summer camp. My fifteen years old brother was among them.
The
road fascinated me from a young age. Where I grew up, in kibbutz Heftzi-bah,
there were no roads, only paths. The kibbutz owned a few vehicles and if you
wanted to go somewhere you would borrow a car. Most of the time we just lived
in one place. My mother’s family lived on another kibbutz. When she got married
she moved to my father’s kibbutz. On holidays, my grandmother used to come and
take me with her back to her kibbutz – Ashdot Yaakov. Since she didn’t drive we traveled by bus or hitched-hike. For me it was always an exciting adventure.
I
remember other times when we went down to the kibbutz’s gate and set on a
bench, just looking at the cars passing by. There was a curiosity to see if any
of these cars will turn in and come to the kibbutz.
Today
most kibbutzim are going through a process of privatization, people own cars
and roads are being built in the kibbutz, as it grows.
My
interest in roads has re-emerged following the loss of my brother’s life.
I
see road as a place of life and death. In a political context, roads are being
built in the middle of Palestinian neighborhoods as part of the Israeli
occupation; they increase fragmentation of these communities.
I
have been looking closely at a Palestinian town which got destroyed in 1948.
This town is called Samakh; it was 10 minute drive from kibbutz Ashdot Yaakov,
yet I first heard about it only in 2008, through reading not history but
fiction. Today instead of Samakh there is a car park and a large junction. For more details about Samakh follow the link: http://www.palestineremembered.com/Tiberias/Samakh/index.html
You
Are Here
(written both in Arabic and Hebrew on the wall) opens a space to mourn both the
personal and the public sorrows at the loss of life. I construct my work on my maternal
subjectivity, in particular, the bringing together of the persona and the
political.

A
Way to Remember was a performative painting with a ritual
orientation which was done over a period of 5 days. This kind of work make
visible not only the end result, but the process. The body itself – the
painter’s body – is made visible together with the painting. The inclusion of
my body in the work is significant for it is that same body who visited the
place where Samakh was. Even if the town doesn’t exist anymore, the place still
exists. Standing there, next to these empty buildings, on the burning asphalt
in August, I remembered it through my body, with my senses, the way one listens
to the unknown. Perhaps echo of life which ended abruptly still vibrates in
this place. In the painting the ‘houses’ as shapes begun to resonate with other
similar shapes which are not houses, such as graves or bomb shelters. On
reflection, I realized that these structures came from my personal and
collective memory. As a young girl I have experienced both the Six Days war
(June 1967) and the Yom Kipur war (October 1973).
In a visit to Israel in 2009 I went to Tzemach, where
Samakh used to be. I wanted to see if I can find some traces. Tzemach is a big
junction where there are petrol station, local college, some shops and a
memorial monument for Jewish Israeli soldiers who got killed in the wars. At
the far end of a car park I finally saw 3 buildings which are what left from
the railway station. They were surrounded by a barrier net together with small
signs which read: ‘Historical building for conservation’.
