A Lake Beyond The Wind by Yahya Yakhlif (1991). In 2008 I went to Winchester Discovery Centre and saw a small book entitled: A Lake Beyond The Wind and underneath, in small letters was written: Palestine. It occurred to me that I never read a Palestinian literature, so I borrowed the book, read it and wept. I knew that every story has a ‘grain of truth’ and was curious to know if there really was a town called Samakh. A quick search on the internet revealed a web-site dedicated to this Palestinian town. I chose one photograph of Samakh from this website and have been working with it since 2009.

יש סוג אחד של "תצלום מתגלגל", מקרי, שנמצא באופן מקרי. לדוגמא, תצלום סמח'. יש סוג שני של צילום מייצגי, צילום כפעולה שהיא חוליה שמתחברת למייצב. המייצב מייצגי-טקסי והצילום מתבצע על-ידי היוצרת, הוא תעודי, שמשתתפים בו האובייקט והיוצרת, התנועה 'נתפסת' בצילום... היוצרת לא נראית אך תנועת גופה 'נרשמת' בצילום.

מה היחס בין גוף היוצרת והתצלום?

המשותף לשני סוגי הצילום הוא הפן המייצגי. תצלום מתגלגל כמעט נשכח, רגע מציאתו הוא רגע מייצגי – מתגלה מחדש. מה הכוונה 'התגלות מחדש'? ראייה שיש בה ראשוניות ("פעם ראשונה שאני רואה צילום זה"). מייצג הוא פעולה שקורת כאן ועכשיו, פעולה שמבוססת על ראשוניות וחד פעמיות. רגע ההתגלות, מציאת הצילום, מה שנמצא במרכזו הוא הראשוניות ויש עוד משהו שג. בשלארד היה מכנה 'חלימה בהקיץ'. כשהתצלום נחשף לעין בפעם הראשונה משהו בו קורא ליוצרת. ה'קול' מגיע לפני הידיעה. הוא מגיע ממצב של חלימה בהקיץ אל מול התצלום. הקול הוא שמניע את היוצרת לבחור בתצלום. מצד אחד יש מצב ראשוני, מצד שני יש בו דברים שמזכירים לי דברים אחרים שכבר ראיתי פעם. המנגנון הזה שדבר מזכיר דבר אחר מבוסס על כך שאחד דומה לשני, זאת אומרת, דמיון. החנות בתצלום מזכירה לי את המחסן בחפצי-בה (הלול הישן). כאן הדמיון משמש כגשר וקשר בין שני דברים שונים מזמנים ומקומות שונים. הדמיון פועל יחד עם הזכרון הויזואלי וההתנסותי.

By thus giving to the poetic image at its peak an absolute of sublimation, I place a heavy stake on a simple nuance… When psychologists and psychoanalysts are furnished this proof, they cease to see anything in the poetic image but a simple game, a short-lived, totally vain game. Images, in particular, have no significance for them – neither from the standpoint of the passions, nor from that of psychology or psychoanalysis. It does not occur to them that the significance of such images is precisely a poetic significance. But poetry is there with its countless surging images, images through which the creative imagination comes to live in its own domain.’
